Childbirth 101:
Labor
Overview.
The series
begins with a clear explana-
tion of pregnancy and the
labor process. Whether a
first-time patient or a vet-
eran, attending this class
will help you understand the
signs of early labor and the
different stages of labor.
You will begin to learn and
practice comfort strategies,
relaxation techniques, and
the management of normal
labor and birth.
n
Childbirth 102: Active
Labor and Delivery.
This
class will include knowing
when to go to the hospital
and signs of active labor
and delivery. Possible varia-
tions of labor and delivery
will also be discussed.
Practice of the nonmedi-
cal comfort techniques,
relaxation and breathing
patterns are continued from
Class 101. Interventions
such as pain medications,
labor induction and other
medical procedures will be
reviewed.
n
Childbirth 103: Amazing
Newborn.
After your baby
has been born, learn about
your newborn’s behavior,
physical appearance and
the importance of skin-
to-skin contact in the
first hours and days after
delivery, as well as the
baby’s natural reflexes and
feeding cues. Basic baby
care—including diapering,
dressing, handling and
bathing—will be included.
n
Childbirth 104:
Postpartum—Becoming
a Family.
Helping your
newborn transition
peacefully to the outside
world takes time, patience
and understanding. You
may experience many
physical and emotional
changes that affect you
and your partner. This
class addresses realistic
expectations, what
newborns need, and the
role the family plays. A
labor practice and review
of prior classes will also be
included.
